How to Get ChatGPT in 2026: Four Doors In, and Which One to Pick
How to get ChatGPT in 2026: open chatgpt.com in any browser and start typing, no account needed. For saved history, uploads, and images, sign up free with an email address, phone number, Google, or Apple. Then install the official app on your phone (App Store or Google Play, published by OpenAI) or your computer (chatgpt.com/download). Free covers most people. Pay only when you hit limits.
That is the whole answer. The rest of this post is the part people get wrong: which door to use for which job, how to avoid the fake apps that sit next to the real one in every store, the age and country rules that quietly get accounts suspended, and the one setting to change before you paste anything real.
TL;DR
- Scale. OpenAI told TechCrunch on February 27, 2026 that ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers.
- Reach. Pew Research Center found 44% of US adults have used ChatGPT, up from 34% in 2025, in a survey of 5,119 adults fielded February 17 to 23, 2026.
- Free is real. OpenAI's pricing page lists unlimited everyday text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna on the Free plan, on web, iOS, and Android.
- Paid tiers in the US. Go is $8 a month, Plus is $20, and Pro starts at $100. New sign-ups to Pro $200 have been paused since September 10, 2026.
- Rules. 13 is the floor, 13 to 18 needs parental consent, and access from outside OpenAI's supported countries list can get an account suspended.
The four doors into ChatGPT
There is one ChatGPT account and four ways to reach it. Pick the door by where you are when the question shows up, not by which one you heard about first.
Door one, the browser. chatgpt.com works on any modern browser. This is where I tell everyone to start, because it needs nothing installed and it is where you create the account the other doors use. Sign up with an email address, a phone number, or Continue with Google or Apple, and remember which one you picked. Most "I paid but I'm still on Free" support tickets come from people who signed up twice with two different methods.
Door two, the phone app. Best for voice and for pointing the camera at something. Door three, the desktop app. Best if ChatGPT is open all day, because a keyboard shortcut summons it over whatever you are working on. Door four, logged out. Fine for one question on a borrowed laptop, useless for anything you will want tomorrow.
Door one: the browser, with or without an account
Open chatgpt.com and you land on a chat box. You can type immediately. The logged-out page tells you what you are missing: log in to get answers based on saved chats, plus images and file uploads.
The free account is worth the minute it takes. OpenAI's pricing page lists what Free includes: unlimited everyday text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, slower image generation, voice chats, deep research, memory, and Codex access. No credit card is asked for.
One setting to change before you paste in anything with a client name or a salary in it. OpenAI's data controls page says that when Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, and they stay in your history. On the web the path is account menu, Settings, Data controls. Signed-in, the choice follows you to every device. Logged out, it still works but is saved only in that browser.
Doors two and three: the official apps, and the fakes next to them
The store search results are the real hazard here. Type "ChatGPT" into the App Store today and the official app sits in a list with Grok, Gemini, and several third-party "AI chat" apps using green and black icons. Some of those are wrappers that charge a weekly subscription for access to someone else's model.
The check takes five seconds:
- iPhone and iPad. The publisher line must read OpenAI OpCo, LLC. Apple's listing requires iOS 18 or later.
- Android. The Google Play package is
com.openai.chatgpt, published by OpenAI. - Mac and Windows. Go to chatgpt.com/download rather than searching. OpenAI's Mac download page says the site detects Apple Silicon or Intel and serves the right installer, and lists macOS 14 as the minimum. The Windows app ships through the Microsoft Store and needs Windows 10 build 17763 or later.
The desktop app also changed shape this summer. OpenAI's migration note explains that the new ChatGPT desktop app puts Chat, Work, and Codex in one window on macOS and Windows. The previous app lives on as ChatGPT Classic and still gets model updates and security patches, but new agent features may land only in the new app. If you are installing for the first time, take the new one. The shortcut is Option + Space on a Mac and Alt + Space on Windows.
Who is allowed to get it
Two rules decide whether an account survives, and both are easy to miss.
Age. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13, and that anyone aged 13 to 18 needs parental consent. If a teacher uses it with a class of children under 13, OpenAI says the interaction must be conducted by an adult. Parents setting up a teenager: make the account together rather than letting them sign up with a borrowed birthday.
Country. OpenAI publishes a supported countries list and states that accessing ChatGPT from outside it may get the account blocked or suspended. That covers VPN tricks too. Losing an account means losing every project and conversation in it, which is a steep price for a workaround.
Free, Go, Plus, or Pro: when to pay
Getting ChatGPT is free. Paying is a separate decision, and it should be made on evidence, not on day one.
The prices come straight from OpenAI. The ChatGPT Go launch post of January 16, 2026 set Go at $8 a month in the US, with localized pricing elsewhere, and said ads would be tested on Free and Go while Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise stay ad-free. OpenAI's Plus page puts Plus at $20 a month and says plainly that API usage is separate and billed independently. The Pro tiers page confirms that since September 10, 2026, new sign-ups and upgrades to Pro $200 are paused, so Pro $100 is the Pro you can actually buy.
The arithmetic is short. Plus is $240 a year. If your time is worth $100 an hour, Plus pays for itself after about 2.4 hours saved in a year. Go at $96 a year is $144 cheaper, but it stays on the lighter model, so it only makes sense if your problem is volume of uploads and images, not quality of reasoning. A quick upgrade path, once you decide: log in, click your profile icon, choose Upgrade plan, pick the tier. If you buy on the phone through Apple or Google, the subscription is managed by that store, and the Restore purchases option in the app's settings fixes most "paid but still Free" mismatches.
Your first ten minutes after you get it
Getting ChatGPT is the easy part. Here is the setup I would do in the first ten minutes so the next hundred conversations are better:
- Sign up once, with one method. Pick Google, Apple, phone, or email and stick to it on every device.
- Turn off training under Settings, then Data controls, if anything you type is not yours to share.
- Install one app, not three. Phone if you talk to it, desktop if you type to it all day.
- Write your custom instructions. Two lines on who you are and how you want answers formatted beats a paragraph of flattery.

You get a working chat, but nothing is saved to an account, so you lose the conversation history, file uploads, image creation, and memory that a free account gives you. The logged-out page itself prompts you to log in for answers based on saved chats, images, and uploads. One privacy detail most people miss: OpenAI's data controls page says signed-out users can still open Settings and turn off Improve the model for everyone, and that choice is saved in that browser. Logged-out use is fine for a quick question on a borrowed laptop. For anything you will want again next week, make the free account, it takes about a minute.
How old do you have to be to get ChatGPT?
OpenAI's help center states that ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13, and that users aged 13 to 18 need parental consent. The Terms of Use add that you must be at least 13, or the minimum age required in your country to consent to use the services. For classrooms with children under 13, OpenAI says the actual interaction with ChatGPT must be done by an adult. Using a VPN to get around either rule is a fast way to lose the account and whatever history and projects you built in it, so do not bother.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth paying for?
Only once Free gets in your way twice in the same week. Plus costs $20 a month in the US, or $240 a year, and OpenAI's pricing page lists what it adds over Go: advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, expanded messages and uploads, expanded deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, and more ChatGPT Work access on desktop, web, and mobile. If you bill $100 an hour, Plus pays for itself if it saves you about 2.4 hours a year, which almost any weekly user clears. If you open ChatGPT twice a month to rewrite an email, Free covers you. Note that Plus does not include API credit. The OpenAI API is a separate product with its own per-token bill, even if you already pay for Plus.
