Google lost two of its biggest AI names in three days, OpenAI's next model is days away, and there is a prompt below that plans your next trip from start to finish.

Google lost two of its top AI minds in three days
On June 18 Noam Shazeer, co-leader of Google's Gemini and a co-author of the 2017 paper that introduced the architecture behind nearly every modern AI model, left Google DeepMind to lead architecture research at OpenAI. The next day John Jumper, who won a Nobel Prize for the protein-folding model AlphaFold, said he is leaving DeepMind after nine years to join Anthropic. Google reportedly paid about 2.7 billion dollars to bring Shazeer back less than two years ago.
Why it matters: the scarcest resource in AI is not chips or data, it is the small number of people who can design a frontier model. Two of them walked out of Google's lab in one week, both heading straight to its rivals. The tools you end up using are shaped by where that talent lands, and this week it did not land at Google. › Last week's free Claude is now a paid add-on. The plan-included window for Claude Fable 5 ended June 22. Since June 23 it still shows in the picker, but using it draws from usage credits at API rates, 10 dollars per million tokens in and 50 out, double Opus 4.8. Anthropic says it will fold the model back into plans once capacity allows. Source.

› OpenAI's next model could land any day. GPT-5.6 is expected between June 22 and 28 in mini, standard, and Pro sizes, with a reported 1.5 million token context window, up from 1 million, and a focus on agent "hands" like browser control. Leaks put its price near a third of Fable 5. None of it is official yet. Source.

› When Fable 5 went dark, open models filled the gap. Within a week of the ban, open-weight coding models from Zhipu, Moonshot, and Cohere became the go-to second source for teams outside the US. Zhipu's GLM-5.2 shipped June 13, one day after the block, at about a tenth the price of US frontier models. Source.

AI guesses at the style you want unless you show it one. Instead of describing what good looks like, paste an example of it: a paragraph you liked, an email in the right tone, a layout you want copied. The model studies the sample and matches its shape, voice, and length far more closely than any adjective like "professional" or "punchy" ever gets you. One real example beats a paragraph of instructions.

The design that made today's AI possible. Introduced in a 2017 research paper called "Attention Is All You Need," a transformer lets a model look at every word in your prompt at once and weigh which words matter most to each other, instead of reading strictly left to right. That attention trick is what lets it follow a long, tangled request and keep track of what refers to what.

Example: every model you have heard of, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, is a transformer underneath. One of the people who co-invented it, Noam Shazeer, is the same person who just left Google for OpenAI (see the top story).
